Assistant Presiding Bishop

Bishop Charles H. Ellis, III is the Pastor of Greater
Grace Temple of Detroit, Michigan
. He pastors nearly 8000 and is known as a leader “with a heart for people.’’ It was during the most trying time of his own life that he took over leadership of the church. It came after the sudden passing of his father, mentor, and friend, Bishop David L. Ellis, a man known in Detroit and nationwide as a dedicated servant of God, community leader, and man of vision, Yet God was faithful. Within only a few years, Pastor Charles Ellis and the GGT family had taken the gospel to thousands through innovative outreaches. Lives were transformed, and membership surged by more than 2000.

In 1998, he was voted “Michigan Pastor of the Year” by the state chapter of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), and Broadcaster of the Year by the Christian Television Network (CTN). He received an honorary doctorate from Aenon Bible College. “Creative” is the best way to describe the ministry. Illustrated sermons draw souls by the hundreds. At one sermon/drama nearly 500 were drawn to the altar seeking salvation. Other efforts include “Football Camp,” where youth learn about football and life from top NFL players to the “Back To School Festival” where youngsters are given a head start on school with free school supplies and free haircuts. The Grace at the Park Free Concert at Chene Park was the biggest outdoor gospel event in Michigan, and features national recording artists. And where else but Detroit would a church sponsor a car show. The GGT Classic Car Show and Taste Fest has drawn thousands over the years. The new SummerFest promises to be just as popular.

Internationally, The Pentecostal Assemblies of the World (P. A. W.) elevated Pastor Ellis to the office of Bishop over the Diocese of Ghana, W. Africa. He currently oversees 81 churches in the African nation, many of them started by the church’s missionary outreach. Nationally, Bishop Ellis brings the message of God’s love to potential millions from coast to coast on “The Word Network” and other broadcast outlets.

Yet, the greatest excitement these days has been generated by the Grand Opening of the “New” Greater Grace Temple, a 35–million dollar worship facility and conference center. It sits as the anchor of the “City of David” at 23500 W. Seven Mile Rd. in Detroit, and is the largest such facility in the city. The church was the vision of his father and it was just before his passing that he would share his dream with his son. Little did he know at the time that he was positioning Charles Ellis for destiny.

With the help and favor of God, Bishop Ellis and the GGT family can now say that “The Vision Has Come to Pass! Their new church complex is a true masterpiece. In addition to a sanctuary, which seats nearly 4000, the banquet hall can seat nearly 700 for dinner and 1000 theater-style in refined and elegant comfort. The complex is also home to the church’s more than 250 ministries.

Bishop Ellis is a Business Administration graduate of Wayne State University with a major in Accounting. He is married to Crisette Michelle, and is the proud father of three children: Kiera Monet, Charles Haywood IV, and Kirsten Maria (DECEASED, 1994).
